Is This a Good Deal? 1 TB External Hard Drive For $89.99?

This year has been hell on my hard drive; it’s pretty much stuffed to bursting right now – what with HQ photos and videos and MP3s and what-not that I just have an overwhelming compulsion to right-click-save since, oh, about February of this year… cough… American Idol … and I have a feeling that it’s not going to let up anytime soon. So I’ve pretty much decided the answer is to just get an external hard drive, hopefully within my limited budget.

I just found this deal on Amazon for the ‘Iomega Prestige 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive‘ that is currently on special 47% discount, and is being sold at $89.99 (savings of $81.00!). That’s almost 50% off, OMG! And I didn’t even know that the term TB even existed for storage (I’m still in the GB stage), but according to Amazon, 1 TB will allow me to store “4 million photos, over 18,500 hours of music, or 1,500 hours of video”. Perfecto!

I’ve checked out the specs and it seems to be portable, weighing 7.7 ounces and rounding out at a pretty small 4.4 x 6.1 x 8.9 inches. Seems pretty compact to me, and it doesn’t look half-bad too, with that aluminum shell casing… I’ve checked out the reviews on Amazon, and majority of people have been pretty happy with their purchase, giving it 5 stars. Although there have also been cases who have reported failure of the drives, which hello, that’s the point of the external drive – to save your precious data, right? But when I check out more expensive drives, there are also cases of drive failure – it just happens I suppose.

So, I’m almost 90% sure I’ll be buying this. Iomega is a pretty respected label, right? And it is the cheapest external drive with that amount of storage space that I’ve seen so far… but I’m almost scared by just how cheap it is (why such a huge discount? maybe because it’s Black Friday?) I’m just throwing this out into cyberspace. Just in case anybody sees this who has bought the damned thing or is more computer savvy than I and have some words of wisdom for me…

Update : Thanks for the informative e-mails, guys! Yeah, I think I am going to order it – I’ll update you if anything untoward happens. From what I read in the reviews, if it’s going to break down, that apparently happens within the first two months. So, keep my fingers crossed.

Also, I’ll be getting it with this amazing bargain too. The Sandisk 4GB Secure Digital SD HC Memory Card is being sold at 66% off and is only $6.74 (savings of $13.25) right now! I can always use another memory card, and I’ve been very happy with Sandisk cards in the past. It works out since I get free shipping anyway.
