Okay, I’m still filing this under “I listened to the sorry lot so you don’t have to” shall we?

As before, the Season 9 idols sound better recorded than live (well, I didn’t actually watch live this time around, just checked out some of the performances via AmericanIdol.Com). But it is still a sorry lot – don’t waste your $ 1.29 kiddies! I have no idea why they picked out these songs when they had a wide-open field open for them – freakin’ Billboard #1’s!

If you want to support an idol, the best one worth your money is still the one and only Crystal Bowersox’s ‘Me and Bobby McGee’. Once again, the recording allows her to build up the song (unlike the truncated live version) and delivers it in her characteristic ‘earth-mama’ style. Crystal is a total pro, and I’d pay good money for a blue-grass folksy album from her right about now. Not sure how she’ll fit into the contemporary album scene or particularly in radio – but there’s definitely a niche that can be carved out for her IMO. Just not sure if she’ll be selling a gazillion albums though. Not that the idols or anyone not named Taylor Swift can sell gazillion albums now.

A pleasant surprise for me is Lee DeWyze’s ‘The Letter’. I haven’t been a big fan of his, and still aren’t, but I do like the recording. His raspy sound complements the song and I do like the bluesy element of the track. He sounds really good on this one, so check it out too.

As for the rest, don’t bother. I’m usually a fan of Didi Benami, but I found listening to her track ‘You’re No Good’ quite painful, and as for Siobhan Magnus, she just sounded like a little girl trying to sing ‘Superstition’ and not quite hitting the mark. And as for her unnecessary scream? still totally unnecessary and quite jarring actually – she should quit her ‘signature’ scream right about yesterday. It’s quite annoying. Katie Stevens’ Big Girls Don’t Cry is totally karaoke, but at least she picked a song from this decade. She just has this tendency to sound real old though – just the tone of her voice which is very cabaret to me. The rest of the Top 11’s tracks I wouldn’t get, even if I could get them for free (which you can if you do a quick search on google).

You can check out the American Idol Top 11 studio recordings on iTunes (do a search for ‘American Idol’). ETA: You can have a quick listen to the studio recordings on this YouTube channel.
