Book Review – Definitely Dead: A Sookie Stackhouse Novel by Charlaine Harris

September 12, 2011 Leave a comment

Book Description:

The sixth Sookie Stackhouse novel from the Anthony Award-winning Southern Vampire series – and the basis for the HBO series True Blood.

Spiked with a frothy fusion of romance, mystery, and fantasy, this bestselling series sends the supernaturally gifted cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse to New Orleans, where she has to deal with the legacy of one of her own family and a host of potentially dangerous characters.

Okay, I’m now done with book six in the Sookie Stackhouse 8-copy Boxed Set (Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood) by Charlaine Harris. The previous book Dead as a Doornail left me with the impression that Sookie’s next adventure would be accompanying the vampire Eric Northman to a sort of vampire’s summit, but hello, by the end of book six Definitely Dead, the vampire summit still hadn’t happened?! Can you say filler! filler! filler! Oh well, so instead of tackling that plot immediately, Charlaine Harris takes us on this detour first.

In Definitely Dead, Sookie attempts to move on from her failed vampire love affairs by dating Quinn, a pretty decent were-tiger she met in Dead as a Doornail. Their fledgling romance is interrupted by attempts on their lives by unknown were enemies, and then, by Sookie’s sudden trip to New Orleans to close out her cousin Hadley’s apartment (Sookie initially learned of Hadley’s death in the short story “One Word Answer” from the anthology A Touch of Dead). Now, Sookie being Sookie, the trip to New Orleans also places her squarely in the middle of a possible war between the vampire Queen of Louisiana and her new husband the King of Arkansas. Throw in some new witches performing an ectoplasmic reconstruction spell, and it’s absolute bedlam in New Orleans!

Definitely Dead definitely has its charms (like the very cool ectoplasmic reconstruction spell), but like I said, I couldn’t help but feel that this was another filler book just to stretch out the series. Now Sookie does learn two earth-shattering truths in this book: a) about her previous relationship with the vampire Bill, and b)  about her family ancestry, but I was already spoiled from watching the TV series True Blood so I already knew these details. Other than that, I just felt like I could have skipped this book before going on to the next, and I wouldn’t have missed much really…

Definitely Dead: A Sookie Stackhouse Novel by Charlaine Harris is available on Amazon as a Kindle edition, Paperback edition, Mass Market Paperback edition, and Audible Audio Edition.

The eBook is also available at B&N, Apple iBookstore, Kobo books and Sony eBookstore.

For a second opinion – here’s some reviews of Definitely Dead by other bloggers:

  • Kalafudra – “This series will never be my favorite one, but it’s decent reading”
  • Pages of Julia – “this book is no literary feat”
  • Bunnycates – “In the end, I was happy with this one”
