Great to see Season 8 American Idol winner Kris Allen out supporting the LGBT community, especially the youth at the Trevor Live! event (12/04/11). Wonder what’s up with him lately – I know he’s been recording for his sophomore album but nothing concrete really. Time for new music, Kris!

Five Books I Absolutely Had to Have But Still Haven’t Read

December 6, 2011 Leave a comment

Saw this old meme while randomly browsing the web, and thought it would be appropriate for me (given the state of my TBR ‘bought’ list!). I could’ve posted much more, but here’s just five I haven’t read!

How about you? Any five books you can mention that you absolutely wanted, but then haven’t read yet?

Rats: Observations on the History & Habitat of the City’s Most Unwanted Inhabitants

Why I had to have it: I bought Rats by Robert Sullivan after I read this pretty awesome post “STRATIGRAPHIES OF INFESTATION” on the BLBG blog (read it!).

Why I haven’t read it: Maybe because I sort of shudder a little when I see the cover?  I remembered that I already owned this book when it was namedropped on The Strain (Stain Trilogy) by Chuck Hogan, Guillermo Del Toro as one of their research books for their vampire series (their NY rat exterminator character was the only smart one in the book IMO). I’m sure I’ll get around to it one day!

Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex

Why I had to have it: I ordered Bonk by Mary Roach after watching her very funny TED talk on “10 things you didn’t know about orgasm” (be sure to watch it!). It’s about sex and science – two very interesting topics 🙂

Why I haven’t read it: I intend to read this really. Really. I have no reason for not having read it yet, other than that I’ve been reading more of fiction books than nonfiction lately.

The Thackery T. Lambshead Cabinet of Curiosities: Exhibits, Oddities, Images, and Stories from Top Authors and Artists

Why I had to have it: I ordered The Thackery T. Lambshead Cabinet of Curiosities by Ann and Jeff Vandermeer after reading the first few chapters on the Harper Collins Browse Inside website (you can read the whole book online if you want). It’s a book full of wonderful steampunk brought to life – sketches, stories about weird inventions – so, I had to have it!

Why I haven’t read it: This is another book I’m shamefaced to admit I have no valid reason for not having read it yet (other than the aformentioned ‘I’ve been reading more of fiction books than nonfiction lately’ excuse).

Switched (Trylle) by Amanda Hocking

Why I had to have it: I bought Switched (Trylle) by Amanda Hocking when she first self-published it since I was curious about her success as an indie publisher (It’s now being re-released by Macmillian / St. Martin’s Griffin). I thought wow, she must be a really good writer to have struck such a chord and become a Kindle million seller as a self-published author!

Why I haven’t read it: I tried to read it – really, really tried to read this paranormal story about a young girl who was supposed to be some kind of monster that her mother wanted to kill. But it’s horribly written – the narrator is unlikable, the dialogue really clunky – I just gave up on it. This is one book I’m not planning on reading anymore at all. It’s been deleted from my Kindle. Maybe her other books are better, I don’t know, but I did download Hollowland (The Hollows, #1) since it’s free, and it’s the same thing – I can’t make any headway through it either! What am I missing?

Battle Royale: The Novel by Koushun Takami

Why I had to have it: I ordered Battle Royale: The Novel by Koushun Takami when this started getting name-dropped everywhere as probably the inspiration for The Hunger Games trilogy. It’s about a group of school children who are forced to battle to the death as part of some incomprehensibly ruthless government program.

Why I haven’t read it: Oh, I’m planning to read this, definitely. It just got buried under the avalanche of other books I’ve been dying to read lately (like Terry Pratchett’s latest Discworld book Snuff for example).
