(American Idol) My Favorite from the Top 13 Boys – Joshua Ledet (You Pulled Me Through)
(view his performance on AmericanIdol.Com)
Hey, it’s American Idol live shows again! So, I did tune in to the Top 13 Boys performance night, and was it just me or was that pretty boring? The judges loved everyone (even Eben Franckewitz!), what’s up with that?!
I ended up doing some reading in front of the TV, and the only guy who made me put down my book and pay attention was Joshua Ledet (who performed “You Pulled Me Through” by Jennifer Hudson). I like that he obviously can ‘Go to Church’ on any song, but he knows to pull back and not be histrionic all throughout.
So, who did you like?

Book Review – Unnatural Causes (Adam Dalgliesh Mysteries, No. 3) by P. D. James
Book Description:
Superintendent Adam Dalgliesh had been looking forward to a quiet holiday at his aunt’s cottage on Monksmere Head, one of the furthest-flung spots on the remote Suffolk coast. With nothing to do other than enjoy long wind-swept walks, tea in front of the crackling wood fire and hot buttered toast, Dalgliesh was relishing the thought of a well-earned break.
However, all hope of peace is soon shattered by murder. The mutilated body of a local crime writer, Maurice Seaton, floats ashore in a drifting dinghy to drag Adam Dalgliesh into a new and macabre investigation.
*
“The only drawback to planning and carrying out a perfect murder is that no one else can appreciate it.”
Unnatural Causes by P. D. James is the third book in her Adam Dalgliesh mysteries (originally published back in 1967). It’s one of the early P. D. James books that I’m just now getting around to reading. In this third outing, Superintendent Adam Dalgliesh escapes to what he hopes to be a “solitary, uncomplicated holiday” at his aunt’s cottage – far away from complicated London and his lover Deborah Riscoe. Alas, his wish was not to be… As satirized by Terry Pratchett on his Discworld Novel Snuff: “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a policeman taking a holiday would barely have had time to open his suitcase before he finds his first corpse.” Well, at least Adam Dalgliesh was able to have time to sit down for his first holiday dinner before the first corpse turned up 😉
Unnatural Causes opens with the bizarre tableau of a dapper dressed corpse (with missing hands) adrift on a small boat off the Suffolk coast. The body turns out to be that of the local mystery novelist Maurice Seaton, neighbor to Dalgliesh’s own Aunt Jane. Being out of his jurisdiction, Adam Dalgliesh finds himself in the unaccustomed (and very frustrating) position of having to watch someone else’s investigation – especially when he does not agree with the conclusions of the local police (Detective Inspector Reckless).
Unfortunately, after that very interesting start, I’m afraid that I found the next chapters to be a very slow read – it took me forever (!) to read the rest of the novel as I kept on either getting sleepy or distracted. It was very, very slow going as we were introduced to the suspects (all of whom seemed to be pretty deplorable characters) and really, hardly anything happened, other than Dalgliesh getting more and more irritated (and he wasn’t the only one!). Things only got interesting again much later on in the book – when Dalgliesh became angry enough to start his own investigation in an ‘unofficial capacity’ and of course, when a second corpse turns up (there’s always a second one, right?).
P. D. James manages to get her groove back though, and finishes up with a pretty fantastic and exciting last quarter that ties up all the loose ends together. I like to guess the identity of the killer myself, but in this case, I wasn’t even close! Very clever finish by P. D. James! And of course, I am in awe with how she just manages to so poetically string words together. I mean, which crime fiction writer still writes like this?
The night pressed around her. She breathed darkness like a physical weight. It was as if the air had thickened with night, had become a heaviness through which she had to fight her way.
Unnatural Causes (Adam Dalgliesh Mysteries, No. 3) by P. D. James is available on Amazon as a Paperback Edition and Audible Audio Edition. *Amazon UK has a Kindle edition

Indie Saturday – Author Joan Reeves on “JANE I’m-Still-Single JONES”
Today, we have author Joan Reeves featured on the blog’s ‘Indie Saturday‘ for her romantic comedy “JANE I’m-Still-Single JONES” (Available on Amazon). Do you ever wonder about ‘the one that got away?’ Well, you might want to check out what happens when our heroine Ms Jane Louise Jones goes home for her ten-year high school reunion and meets the first love that got away …
Author Joan Reeves writes about ‘JANE I’m-Still-Single JONES’ (and where she gets her ideas a.k.a LIFE’S IDEA BOUTIQUE!):
For some reason, readers are curious about how we authors get the ideas that result in books. I’ve never taken part in a book signing or given a presentation to readers without being asked: ‟Where do you get your ideas?”
I always want to say, ‟At the Idea Boutique of course!” Instead, I earnestly reply that my book premises come from everything I see, hear, or experience. Ultimately, the serious answer is the same as the flippant one because Life may be like a box of chocolates, but it’s also like a gigantic Idea Boutique.
A case in point is my popular romantic comedy JANE (I’m Still Single) JONES. This book bears the distinction of being one of only two of my traditionally-published novels that retained its original title.
Last year, I expanded and updated JANE and published it as an ebook available at all the popular ebook sellers. In the fall, I was contacted by an editor for Bragelonne, one of the largest French publishing houses. She had obtained a digital copy of JANE (I’m Still Single) JONES, read it, loved it, and contacted me immediately to purchase French World Rights for it!
I was blown away that my southern humor brand of romantic comedy spoke so clearly to a Parisian editor. In the end, Bragelonne contracted for JANE (I’m Still Single) JONES, JUST ONE LOOK, and STILL THE ONE, for print and ebook.
The idea for JANE, the story of a high school reunion and second chances, came from my own high school reunion that I attended a few years ago. In the book, Jane Louise Jones, formerly the most popular girl in high school whose heart was broken by her secret love aka the high school’s biggest geek, attends her high school reunion.
When she gets her welcome packet, she’s mortified that she’s expected to wear a name tag that reads, ‟JANE (I’m Still Single) JONES.”
You see, at MY twenty year high school reunion, a friend who had never married had taken her own name tag and written on it: ‟I’m Still Single.” (Out of discretion, I won’t tell you her name since her career is in the political arena.)
I took one look at that name tag and a whole world of ‟what if’s” popped into my head. That was the idea I grabbed that night from Life’s Idea Boutique. When I returned home, I wrote that one phrase, ‟I’m Still Single,” on a sticky note and stuck it on my monitor. Then I created a fictional world and characters to tell the story inspired by that phrase.
As an ebook, that story and those characters continue to attract readers all over the world. Everyone seems to identify with Jane and her first love that got away. They also like Morgan Sherwood, the hero of the story who is a nerd no longer. Now he’s a man with the looks of George Clooney, the genius of Steve Jobs, and the money of Bill Gates.
Readers all seem to like the wacky old ladies of the Vernon Ladies Bridge Club–where none of them know how to play bridge–as well as Jane’s father who is the local Sheriff. I’ve had so much email about the funny old ladies that I’ve got a series of short stories in the planning stages that will star them and their meddling ways. (Think seven women like Betty White!)
So where do I get my ideas? From life, with its exquisite diversity of absurdness, comedy, and drama.
Joan Reeves is an overnight success – and it only took her 25 years to achieve that status! She’s a best selling Kindle author of Romance. In her spare time, she’s a mild-mannered reporter for the Daily Planet who – no, wait, that’s someone else. Seriously? Okay, if we must be serious….
Joan Reeves is a multi-published print and ebook author who is published all over the web under her own name, various pseudonyms, and as a ghost. She’s the writer and publisher of the long-running blog SlingWords. On her blog are subscription forms for free newsletters: Wordplay for readers and Writing Hacks for writers.
JANE I’m-Still-Single JONES by Joan Reeves is available at Amazon in Kindle format. The ebook is also available on B&N, Smashwords, All Romance eBooks, iTunes and Xin Xii. You can check out her Amazon author page or her website (joanreeves.com) for a list of all her books. You can also find Joan Reeves’s books on Barnes & Noble.

1st Update on ‘Indie Saturday’ – Calling On Indie / Self Published Authors!
Hi all! So it’s been two months since we started this new feature on the blog – the ‘Indie Saturday‘ – where we have an *indie author guest post each Saturday and introduce their books to us! It’s gone really well so far and we’ve had some really interesting guest posts! Why did we start this new feature? Well, we really enjoy reading authors’ notes (foreword/afterword) on their books and the regular authors’ posts on the Kindle Editors’ Blog, so we thought we’d give a venue for *indie authors to do so on RandomizeME too.
To keep things interesting, we’ve make sure that each month, the books generally fall under the same theme. We’ve gone through Christmas, Coming-of-Age and we’ll be finishing up with Romantic comedies this February!
And here’s the planned themes for the coming months of 2012 (please get in touch with us if you are interested):
- March – Historical Fiction (5 saturdays – all slots filled)
- April – Inspirational/ Religious / Christian Fiction (4 saturdays)
- May – Mysteries (preference will be given to cozy mysteries) (4 saturdays)
* our definition of an indie author = self published (incl those with backlist or out-out-print books) or those aligned with a small publisher
