Silenced by the Yams (A Barbara Marr Murder Mystery #3) by Karen Cantwell

Describe your new book ‘Silenced by the Yams (A Barbara Marr Murder Mystery #3)‘ (Books on the Green) in ten words or less

Movie lover Barbara Marr investigates a murder in Silenced by the Yams.

Where or how did you come up with the idea for your story?

I was talking with a friend who worked as a projectionist for a national film institute located in Washington, DC. I already knew I wanted to use the title, Silenced by the Yams for my third Barbara Marr Murder Mystery, so after learning from him, that he often served as the projectionist for preview screenings of major release films, I decided to make that the basis for my plot. Then I just needed to invent a character that was, in fact, Silenced by the Yams. And who better than a beastly movie director? As a side note, sadly, that friend passed away a few months later. I dedicated the book to him as well as created a character in his name – Clarence the projectionist. I would much rather he had lived to read the book though.

Which of your characters is closest to your heart and why?

Wow. That’s like asking which of my children is my favorite! Hmm . . . okay, if you’re going to make me choose, I think I will say Peggy. A fellow writer puts her this way – she takes the scenic route when telling a story. She’s warm-hearted, very disorganized in her thoughts and her life, well-intentioned, and a faithful friend. She’s also very easy for me to write, so she gets bonus points from me for that!

Do you have a day job? If yes, tell us about it and how did that affect your writing / publishing process?

In addition to writing, I help my husband run the two offices in his optometric practice. I’m lucky, because I don’t have to physically be in the office very often, so I’m able to be flexible. I spend about half of my day working on office paperwork and the other half writing. My goal is to hire others to do all of my office work, allowing me to write full time.

Tell us about an upcoming book or project you’re excited about

I’m working on a new book which will be the first in a humorous paranormal romance series. This first book is titled Keep Me Ghosted, and the main character, Sophie Rhodes, is a thirty-something out-of-work woman who has a ghost companion. When she finally finds a job, it’s working for a doctor who is also shadowed by a very clingy, love-struck ghost that does not like Sophie. It’s meant to be cute and fun escapist reading. I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of ghosts and spirits “walking” among us, so this is my way of channeling (pun intended) that fascination.

Bonus Question! Fill in the blank: If you like ___, you’ll probably like my book too!

If you like Janet Evanovich, you’ll probably like my Barbara Marr Murder Mysteries too!
