‘5 Questions’ with Susanne O’Leary

5 Questions

Virtual Strangers

Describe your book ‘Virtual Strangers (Love and murder in cyberspace)‘ in ten words or less

Virtual Strangers, a quirky romantic suspense set in cyberspace.

Where or how did you come up with the idea for your story?

My co-writer and I met on a writer’s site. There was a lot of trolling and sometimes even flame wars. As a result, we decided to put it all into a story, where the intrigues and animosities online spill into real life, resulting in both murder and romance.

Which of your characters is closest to your heart and why?

My co-writer and I both put a lot of ourselves and our feelings into the main characters, mine was Annika, a ditsy blonde with a smart ass attitude and his was Seabee, a bad boy and renegade writer with a shady past. I think we also put a lot of our own relationship into the story, including many of our arguments and a certain cehmistry.

Do you have a day job? If yes, tell us about it and how did that affect your writing / publishing process?

I am now a full time writer. My co-writer is a professional TV and film script writer.

Tell us about an upcoming book or project you’re excited about

We are now currently working on a second ‘virtual’ detective story. This one is set in Stockholm. Sweden, where we both come from originally.

It’s going to be even better than the first one, as it is set in a place we both know so well. We want to poke a little fun at the Scandinavian crime wave and also write something a little more light-hearted than the usual ‘Scandinavian dark’.

We really enjoy working together and for me our collaboration has meant that my writing has acquired more bite and a whole new edge.

Bonus Question! Fill in the blank: If you like ___, you’ll probably like my book too!

I have to say that I’m very inspired by Stieg Larsson‘s books, even though his work sometimes has too much graphic violence. Also Henning Mankell, the author of the Wallander crime stories. They were made into a TV series and Ola (my c-writer) wrote the scripts for some of those.

Having read this book I can confirm it is a great, funny story. The interaction between the main characters themselves and also the others on the writers’ site is brilliant. For anyone who doubts these things go on (maybe not the murders) believe me, this is so true to life I was totally taken in. The only thing that didn’t seem true was the fact that these websites don’t actually seem to take any would-be writers on! Great story, loved every word!
