‘5 Questions’ with Donna Burgess

5 Questions

Today I’m thrilled to welcome indie author Donna Burgess to the blog as part of the ‘5 Questions’ with authors series!

If you are an author who would like to participate in the series, fill out the questionnaire here! And if you are a reader who wants to suggest an author for the series, just send me an email!

Pressed (The Reluctant Hero Series, Book Two)

Describe your book ‘Solstice: a novel of the Zombie Apocalypse‘ in ten words or less

Solstice is about darkness, a wild road trip across Europe, and zombies.

Where or how did you come up with the idea for your story?

I was taking a course where we studied the cultural habits of people living near the North pole, where it stays dark for six months year. All I could think of was just how awful it might be if the sun never rose again. I’m a big sun worshiper, so just the dropping temperatures and darkness would get to me.

The story just evolved from that.

I’ve written a piece of fiction, not a textbook, so obvious liberties were taken to make it work. The sun isn’t going to vanish, but then again, there aren’t any actual zombies, either.

Which of your characters is closest to your heart and why?

I liked Melanie. She starts as a mousey college student with asthma and a crush on a man she cannot have. But by the end of the novel, she is a fighter and a survivor.

Do you have a day job? If yes, tell us about it and how did that affect your writing / publishing process?

I’m a student–an old student, but a happy one. Returning to college has nothing but help the writing process. Plus, I find that I’m disciplined than ever before.

Tell us about an upcoming book or project you’re excited about

I have a YA zombie novel I’m working on with my daughter, Alicia. It’s going to be a sort of collage, with text and graphics. Alicia is doing the graphics because she’s the artist in the family.

Bonus Question! Fill in the blank: If you like ___, you’ll probably like my book too!

If you like Children of Men by P.D. James or Autumn by David Moody, you’ll probably like my books, too!
