25 essential writing tips: Guide to writing good fiction by Alana Woods

Describe Deeds of Mercy: Book Three of the Mark Taylor Series in ten words or less

Friendship and forgiveness in a thriller with an emotional punch.

Where or how did you come up with the idea for your story?

This was the third book in a series, so it grew out of the other two.

I love the idea of the regular Joe who is thrust into the role of hero. I also love a little supernatural/magical realism twist, hence the magical camera that produces images of the future.

In the first book, No Good Deed, the character’s attempts to prevent 9/11 makes him look like he was involved and he’s arrested as an enemy combatant.

Which of your characters is closest to your heart and why?

Mark Taylor — my reluctant hero. I think a lot of people can relate to him or maybe I’m just too optimistic, but I believe most people would be a hero under the right circumstances and so they would appreciate Mark’s attempts.

He has the special camera and feels compelled to do what he can to use it to prevent tragedies. He’s not perfect though and he gets angry and frustrated, and even scared at times.

Do you have a day job? If yes, tell us about it and how did that affect your writing / publishing process?

I do have a day job. I currently work full-time as a respiratory therapist. It affects the process directly because two days a week, I work 12 hour shifts. (really 12.5 hrs because we don’t get paid for lunch.) Add another 45 minutes of commute time, and having to get up to do it all again the next day doesn’t leave me with much energy to write on those days.

It also shows up in my writing as some of Mark’s attempted saves. The opening scene in No Good Deed was inspired by a real life baby I worked on who didn’t have a Mark around to save her.

I’ve been trying to go part-time since January 2012, but my job hasn’t had the staff to allow that yet. I’m keeping my fingers crossed it will happen soon.

Tell us about an upcoming book or project you’re excited about

I am currently finishing up a prequel to my series! I’m so excited about it. In writing it, I’ve found out more about the character than I though possible. It has been fun writing him from his pre-hero days, and seeing the transition.

It will be available sometime in October and titled Mark Taylor: Genesis.

Bonus Question! Fill in the blank: If you like ___, you’ll probably like my book too!
