5 Questions

Today I’m thrilled to welcome indie author James Bruno to the blog as part of the ‘5 Questions’ with authors series!

If you are an author who would like to participate in the series, fill out the questionnaire here! And if you are a reader who wants to suggest an author for the series, just send me an email!

Tribe by James Bruno

Describe your book Tribe in ten words or less

TRIBE is about power, love, fathers and daughters in conflict-riven Afghanistan.

Where or how did you come up with the idea for your story?

I worked on Afghanistan as a diplomat for almost five years, both in Washington and in the field. The place and the people got under my skin. So, I wrote a novel incorporating my experiences and observations.

As with all of my writings, I had to submit it for security review to the U.S. State Dept. They redacted parts and made me change other parts.

Which of your characters is closest to your heart and why?

Camilla Loomis because, through sheer force of will power and scrappy ambition, she lifted herself out of a trailer trash upbringing to become the leading social doyenne of Washington. I had great fun writing about her.

Do you have a day job? If yes, tell us about it and how did that affect your writing / publishing process?

I was a Foreign Service officer for 23 years. I’m currently a reserve officer in the Diplomatic Readiness Reserve (I was called up for return to active duty in Iraq or Afghanistan, but Pres. Obama’s policy to draw down from both countries got me off the hook!)

Regularly throughout my career, I faced situations which made me say, “Fiction can’t rival this.”

Tell us about an upcoming book or project you’re excited about

HAVANA QUEEN, an espionage thriller set in Cuba and GTMO, both places where I’ve served. It posits an end of days scenario for the Castro regime. It’s based not only on my personal experiences working there, but also on many months of intensive research.

The State Dept. is currently reviewing the manuscript to ensure I don’t spill any secrets. This onerous process takes at least six months.

Bonus Question! Fill in the blank: If you like ___, you’ll probably like my book too!

If you like Daniel Silva, Graham Greene and John LeCarre, you’ll like my books.
