Hard Lines by Dave Conifer

Describe your book Hard Lines in ten words or less

Hard Lines: An athlete resists corruption undertaken in his name.

Where or how did you come up with the idea for your story?

Reading about some headlines in college athletics, it’s almost as if some of these schools have full time staff on the payroll to do nothing but cover up anything that makes the program look bad.

Which of your characters is closest to your heart and why?

Jake Zarephath, the main character, is all about how I think I’d react in that situation. He’s naive and scared at first, and goes along with the cover up. Eventually he learns that some of the people guiding him are immoral, and that he can’t be a part of it. In the end he finds the courage to make tough decisions.

What do you hope/wish that your reader will take away after reading this book?

I hope it’s an enjoyable story, which is all it is. Beyond that, I’d hope they take a closer look and make their own evaluations the next time there’s a scandal in college athletics.

Tell us about an upcoming book or project you’re excited about

Right now I’m planning on writing a new story starring the bounty hunter / private detective that stole the show in my last book, Primary Justice.
