‘5 Questions’ Interview With H.M. Ward! @hmward

Today I’m thrilled to welcome author H.M. Ward to the blog as part of the ‘5 Questions’ with authors interview series! H.M. Ward was featured in the Washington Post for her debut novel Demon Kissed. This novel quickly became a bestseller, hitting #1 in multiple lists.

Describe your book Vampire Apocalypse #2 Catalyst in ten words or less

Vampires rule a frozen earth – Kahli’s the last wild human.

Where or how did you come up with the idea for your story?

I had the idea prior to the cover shoot, but when I shot the model and she had that jacket, and I loved the way it looked. So the world in the novel shifted.

Instead of a dried out wasteland, I switched it to a post-glacial world that’s been doomed to another ice age. The anemic humans, crazed animals, and starved vampires sprung from that.

So, I was inspired by a jacket. Yeah, I didn’t believe it either, but hey – whatever works. 😉

Which of your characters (in this book) is closest to your heart and why?

Kahli is my favorite character.

She’s strong and brave and says what she wants, but she’s flawed as well. The thing is, she doesn’t let the flaws hold her back. She lives her life and doesn’t wait around for a hero.

Do you have a day job? If yes, tell us about it and how did that affect your writing / publishing process?

I was a full time photographer prior to being a full time writer. The two go hand in hand.

It’s really helpful to be able to shoot someone that you see as the heroine. It gives the story more depth and allowed me more ways to express the story, in photographs and words. It’s cool!

Tell us about an upcoming book or project you’re excited about

I’m working on another series: THE SECRET LIFE OF TRYSTAN SCOTT.

Trystan and Mari are into their third book and things finally start to get better for them. I love Trystan. That series started as a writing exercise and took off from there. I can’t believe how many fans relate to Mari and Trystan. It’s awesome when characters relate to real people like that.
