FREE eBook – Wildwood (Wildwood Chronicles) by Colin Meloy via iBooks & Crate&Barrel

November 14, 2012 Leave a comment

Crate&Barrel.Com has partnered with Apple iTunes and put up this great site for music, app and eBook freebies! I didn’t care much for the free music or apps (mostly cooking apps), but this eBook freebie did perk my interest!

Wildwood (Wildwood Chronicles) by Colin Meloy (Balzer + Bray/HarperCollins) is FREE to download (you’ll get a free promo code after you click on “get the download“). Note that it’s priced at $7.59 for the Kindle edition.

Book Description:

Prue McKeel’s life is ordinary. At least until her baby brother is abducted by a murder of crows. And then things get really weird.

You see, on every map of Portland, Oregon, there is a big splotch of green on the edge of the city labeled “I.W.” This stands for “Impassable Wilderness.” No one’s ever gone in—or at least returned to tell of it.

And this is where the crows take her brother.

So begins an adventure that will take Prue and her friend Curtis deep into the Impassable Wilderness. There they uncover a secret world in the midst of violent upheaval, a world full of warring creatures, peaceable mystics, and powerful figures with the darkest intentions. And what begins as a rescue mission becomes something much bigger as the two friends find themselves entwined in a struggle for the very freedom of this wilderness.

A wilderness the locals call Wildwood.

Wildwood is a spellbinding tale full of wonder, danger, and magic that juxtaposes the thrill of a secret world and modern city life. Original and fresh yet steeped in classic fantasy, this is a novel that could have only come from the imagination of Colin Meloy, celebrated for his inventive and fantastic storytelling as the lead singer of the Decemberists. With dozens of intricate and beautiful illustrations by award-winning artist Carson Ellis, Wildwood is truly a new classic for the twenty-first century.

‘5 Questions’ Interview With J.R. Leckman!

5 Questions

Today I’m thrilled to welcome author J.R. Leckman to the blog as part of the ‘5 Questions’ with authors interview series! J.R. Leckman writes horror, fantasy, and science fiction.

If you are an author who would like to participate in the series, fill out the questionnaire here! And if you are a reader who wants to suggest an author for the series, just send me an email!

The Legend of Kimberly: Pursuit by J.R. Leckman

Describe your book The Legend of Kimberly: Pursuit in ten words or less

Little Kimberly,
To save her half-demon friend,
will fly in airships.

Where or how did you come up with the idea for your story?

This is a sequel to The Legend of Kimberly: Inheritance.

The premise of the series came about many years ago when I wrote a short story about a little girl who loses her grandfather. My own grandfather had just recently passed away, and all I could think about were the stories of U.F.O.’s he used to tell me about, and how I would never get to hear them again. The main character loses her grandfather, but discovers that all of his stories were not only real, but that he is a refuge from this magical place.

I liked the idea of being able to recapture those lost memories in the form of something real, and experience them firsthand again.

Which of your characters (in this book) is closest to your heart and why?

The main character Kimberly is very dear to my heart for many reasons.

I wanted to portray a young woman who is forced to grow up very suddenly. She comes from a tragic background. When she gets the opportunity to become a hero and travel the land she loves so much, she spends quite a bit of time learning the hard way. Her family’s history follows her around like a black cloud, forcing her into that role of adulthood.

I put the poor girl through such misery, and after each trial she comes back full of rage and intent. Her choices may not always be the right ones, but they are hers to make.

Do you have a day job? If yes, tell us about it and how did that affect your writing / publishing process?

I teach middle school math and science.

As far as affecting my writing, it really decreases the amount of time I should be putting words to paper. A a matter of fact, I am answering these questions after spending four hours (no, I am not exaggerating) grading.

I do get the chance to meet a lot of young people who will inevitably become ingredients for future characters in my books.

Tell us about an upcoming book or project you’re excited about

I am really excited about one of my works in progress, a story called Phantom Valley. It is a horror story that is a direct sequel of one of my short stories. I enjoy it because it gives me the opportunity to stretch my own twisted imagination.

This story stemmed from an old ghost story about how a bunch of miners accidentally discovered a gate to hell. Of course, in Phantom Valley, this gateway goes to where the Old Ones live, a place of banishment. When they are released, it is up to a teacher with a haunted past and a paperboy to save the day.

I really get to evolve my characters before slaughtering them off.

Bonus Question! Fill in the blank: If you like ___, you’ll probably like my book too!

Old school Piers Anthony, Roger Zelazny, and even J.R.R Tolkien.
