5 Questions

Today I’m thrilled to welcome author Valerie Gillen to the blog as part of the ‘5 Questions’ with authors interview series!

A Little Magic by Valerie Gillen

Describe your book A Little Magic in ten words or less

A Little Magic: She didn’t believe in magic – until the magic chose her.

Where or how did you come up with the idea for your story?

I love the paranormal genre and wanted to write one of my own.

I made the heroine an Irish stepdancer, as I’m a competitive stepdancer myself and wanted to share my love of the sport with others.

Also, I thought it would be fun to have her experience the culture shock of being plucked out of California and plunked down in Vermont in what we here euphemistically call “mud season”, which is technically after winter but before spring, can last for weeks and includes knee deep ruts, closed roads and random snow storms.

But, we have maple sugaring to make up for it.

Which of your characters (in this book) is closest to your heart and why?

Probably Bartholome – the familiar to the local fairie prince, who becomes the heroine’s ally in her quest to save her grandmother and recover the Sacred Jewel of Faerie.

He’s based on a dear companion of mine- don’t want to put in any spoilers but once people read the book, they will understand!

Do you have a day job? If yes, tell us about it and how did that affect your writing / publishing process?

I’ve been a medical transcriptionist for over 30 years.

It’s totally different from writing, as far as creativity; it’s more technical language and correct English. Although, sometimes, after sitting at the computer working all day, the last thing I want to do is sit back down to write!

Sometimes I’ll use a notebook instead and go lay down somewhere peaceful.

Tell us about an upcoming book or project you’re excited about

I’ll be posting a permafree prequel to A Little Magic, called Green Mountain Magic by the end of October.
