5 Questions

Today I’m thrilled to welcome author J. A. Huss to the blog as part of the ‘5 Questions’ with authors interview series! J.A. Huss writes new adult speculative and science fiction as well as an entire line of science non-fiction textbooks that cater to home learners.

If you are an author who would like to participate in the series, fill out the questionnaire here! And if you are a reader who wants to suggest an author for the series, just send me an email!

FLIGHT (I Am Just Junco Dot Com) by J. A. Huss

Describe your book FLIGHT (I Am Just Junco Dot Com) in ten words or less

Teenage hit-girl, Junco, controls the fate of two civilizations in FLIGHT.

Where or how did you come up with the idea for your story?

I originally wanted to write a silly paranormal romance as my first novel, a way to practice and work out all my new author mistakes before I started on my (awesome) science fiction series.

But when I decided to use the SF world I had already built, Junco sorta went psycho in chapter three and the story turned very dark.

I gave up the idea for a PNR, adapted it as a sort of prequel to the original SF idea, and let her have control as a character. That’s how the I Am Just Junco series was born.

Which of your characters (in this book) is closest to your heart and why?

FLIGHT is the third book in the series, but the entire saga revolves around Junco.

I love Junco. Pretty much everyone loves Junco, both in and out of the books. She’s tough, she’s a survivor, but she’s still very fragile.

In FLIGHT, she’s literally got the weight of the world on her shoulders, but at the same time she’s being confronted with lies about her past at every turn. She makes the most of any situation, but she’s not perfect and she’s never pretended to be good.

Do you have a day job? If yes, tell us about it and how did that affect your writing / publishing process?

I have two day jobs actually. I inspect farms for a state government and I run an online subscription website where I sell non-fiction science materials for home learners.

When I inspect farms, I travel all over the eastern half of Colorado. This is where I built my fictional AF world for the first book, CLUTCH, so it’s a special place for me.

My background in science definitely helps me write science fiction. I never have to research scientific facts for my books, it’s nice when that part can just roll off the keyboard.

Hand to hand combat and sniper training – now that’s another story. I spend all my research time on that kind of stuff.

Tell us about an upcoming book or project you’re excited about

Book four in the I Am Just Junco series is called RANGE and is due out April 1, 2013.

In this story Junco is alone and in charge of everything. Quite a change from where she’s been (surrounded by guards or friends or teammates). All the choices in this book are hers, as are the mistakes. There is no one to blame if it all goes wrong.

(And since there is a book five, there’s time for lots of things to go wrong in RANGE!)

Bonus Question! Fill in the blank: If you like ___, you’ll probably like my book too!

If you liked The Hunger Games or Ender’s Game, you’ll probably like the I Am Just Junco series…as long as you’re up for a more violent and foul-mouthed version of both. 😉
