Top Sites Tuesday – Holiday Party!

December 23, 2009 3 comments

This weeks theme is all about you. What puts you in the Holiday Spirit? Let everyone know what you’re up to or just wish everyone Happy Holidays!

Just wanted to wish everyone on Blog Dump’s Top Sites Tuesday a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I was just thinking that maybe for some other people, this Christmas won’t be very merry at all. Maybe the job or money situation isn’t so good. And since parents always want to give their best for their children (and grandchildren too!), maybe some are struggling to just provide something nice this holidays. To anybody in this situation, just remember that children will always value the time and love of a parent rather than expensive toys.

My siblings and I were just talking about it recently, and I remember my parents going on and on about all the toys that they’d bought for us, that would essentially be broken like 24 hours later! And you know the funny thing was? My siblings and I agreed that the best ‘toy’ we ever had was this humongous empty box that had held our giant freezer that we converted to a battle tank. It became this big family project and we all sat down and painted it battle-ready green and it gave us hours of essentially ‘free’ entertainment… My dad and mom took time out to play the enemy patrol… and we all have great memories of it! And we couldn’t remember half of the so called ‘expensive’ toys. Silly children I guess 😉

And a Public Service Announcement please…

Welcome! The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,867 groups with 6,857,000 members across the globe. It’s a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It’s all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them’s good people). Membership is free. To sign up, find your community by entering it into the search box above or by clicking on “Browse Groups” above the search box. Have fun!

Be that as it may, I just wanted to highlight this amazing grass-roots effort for recycling on the internet. I learned about Freecycle.Org from my friends who have been ‘recycling’ their unwanted stuff and giving it away to people who would treasure it. Sort of like, ‘my trash is your treasure’ I guess. It’s not about just charity really. It’s about being ‘green’ for the environment, hence the emphasis on recycling. It’s about cherishing that loved object enough to give it away to someone who needs it instead of into the trash. Me and my friends have given away books and toys and pretty much anything that still has value that’s just taking up space. I think this is a great way of sharing some ‘holiday spirit’ this Christmas!

Top Sites Tuesday Meme – Your Favorite Holiday Music!

December 9, 2009 9 comments

Cool meme this Tuesday – so I’m joining! 🙂

I can’t say it’s my ‘favorite’ holiday music, but listening to the Jackson 5’s ‘Give Love on Christmas Day’ sure brings back one fond memory for me.

I was in the second grade and our new ‘progressive’ English teacher had a ‘radical’ idea for a Christmas play. Instead of doing the traditional baby Jesus in a manger story, our teacher wrote up a completely ‘modern’ treatment about class inequality (and other social issues that escape me now) that somehow by-passed the censors (i.e. the nuns – yup, I was in a Catholic girls’ school). The details are foggy to me now, but I do remember my part – I played the bad guy – a meanie of a social-worker who was going to take away the kids from their poor parents on Christmas Day. It was my first (and last) big role on stage, and my mother had dressed me in a totally inappropriate pink dress with a ruffled skirt. My mom remembers the play as ‘fantastic’, my older sister says it was a ‘hot mess’ with no one remembering all their lines. Whatever.

Anyway, the way I remember it, we were totally amazing and the audience loved us, and we ended the play with a rousing rendition of yes, the Jackson 5’s ‘Give Love on Christmas Day’ (the whole point of this post). Listening to it now brings me back to that excited little girl back in second grade.

So, how about you? What’s your favorite? Or the song that brings back memories?

P.S. The whole album ‘JACKSON 5 – CHRISTMAS COLLECTION‘ is kinda like a little treasure now. Listening to Michael singing ‘Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town’, ‘Up On The House Top’ or ‘I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus’ (seriously, as far as I’m concerned, no one else can top that) … there’s a little bit of heaven there. There’s also pain in my heart for the little boy that was. RIP Michael…

Top Sites Tuesday Meme – Thought(s) of the Day On Tuesday

November 3, 2009 4 comments

Cool meme this Tuesday – so I’m joining! 🙂

I’ve got the saying ‘May you live in interesting times!’ running in my head. It’s supposed to be this old Chinese saying or curse (spoken in the mode of ‘Confucious says‘), but Chinese people I know say it ain’t from them really … and google tells me that it’s actually from “U-Turn” a sci-fi short story by Duncan Munro. Well, you learn something everyday.

Anyway, I was just watching the History Channel, and they had this program up all about 2012. Maybe it was prompted by the movie 2012, but they were citing all sorts of stuff from Nostradamus, to the Mayans, to the Egyptians, to the Freemasons, etc. Supposedly, Dec 21, 2012 is the tipping point for planet-wide upheavals as related to a cosmic phenomenon called the ‘Galactic Alignment‘ (where our sun will align with the center of the Milky Way galaxy). Sounds like a script straight from the SyFy channel, no wonder Hollywood made a movie… at any rate, they say interesting times are up ahead. The world as we know it will never be the same again.

But interesting times are here now. I’ve got a friend from the Philippines who experienced being stranded on the roof for hours waiting for rescue while flood waters rose alarmingly. I’ve seen the video of that hotel in Taiwan just tilt and collapse in the height of a storm. I could go on and on. And it’s not just natural disasters, we’ve got war, swine flu, global warming, etc etc (just take your pick). And through it all, life goes on. Even in the most inhospital regions of Antarctica and beneath volcanic lava lakes (I learned that from the Discovery Channel).

And so the lesson I take from this? Thank goodness for cable… or we wouldn’t know anything… lol … Sorry, I was trying to think of something profound to say, but nothing came out. Life. Just. Is. ya know?

P.S. Before leaving my page, take a break and listen to ‘Trouble Is A Friend‘ by Lenka. It’s a really cool song, and relevant to my Thought of the Day. Really. It is.

Top Sites Tuesday Meme – Finish this Sentence – When I get home, I like to…

September 22, 2009 10 comments

This week the theme is: Finish this Sentence – “When I get home, I like to…”

It’s something new! Just finish the sentence! It’s going to be neat how many different ways one sentence can be finished!

Cool meme for this week … Okay, here goes … When i get home, I like to lie back, relax, listen to music and allow myself to sink into – well – anything. I place my iPod on shuffle mode and when I hit a tune that resonates with me in particular, I may end up listening to that one song again and again and again…

And last night, this particular song happened to be … “Race You” by Elizabeth & The Catapult from the album Taller Children. I love how this song mixes childish playfulness & whimsy with adult-ish introspection.

I end up feeling nostalgic. I remember in particular one summer day where the power conked out and it was sweltering hot, and all the batteries had to be saved and the games ran out of charge, but somehow it didn’t matter. We just improvised. It just became a long summer day full of other silly kinds of games and wonderful water gun fights when the heat got too much … and when finally, finally, blessed cool dusk fell and still the power was out … everyone just gathered outside under the stars and we, the children, played shadow puppets with flashlights. Good times.

Top Sites Tuesday Meme – Your Favorite Pet/Companion Animal of All Time!

September 16, 2009 8 comments

Cute theme for this week’s Top Sites Tuesday… so I’ll jump in (a little late…)

Unfortunately, I’ve never had a pet. Is that terrible? I don’t know – we just didn’t have the space growing up. We didn’t even have a garden. Sooo, the funny thing is… back in the day, I was a huuuge Sesame Street fan and I kinda adopted Mr. Snuffalufagus as my pet/invisible friend just like Big Bird. Why not? Mr. Snuffalufagus is sweet and cuddly and only appears when you need him 🙂

Meet Mr. Snuffalufagus (In case you live under a rock in Mars and have no idea who he is…)

Currently Listening to … Jason Mraz’ “Try, Try, Try”

June 16, 2009 5 comments

It’s my new favorite song – unfortunately, you can’t buy it yet on iTunes. Someone found it off some Chinese blogs since it’s apparently included in a Chinese EP. I love the vibe though – so cool – perfect song for the summer 🙂

Listen in!
