Album Review – Gemini EP by Jack and White

  1. Gemini
  2. Double Trouble
  3. Inside Outside
  4. Telephone Games
  5. Smoke and Mirrors
  6. Feathers

So, who’s Jack and White? It’s a newly formed duo composed of American Idol finalist Brooke White (this is her 2nd album, after her debut  High Hopes and Heartbreak) and singer-songwriter Jack Matranga.  Apparently, the story is that Jack was called in to co-write a song with Brooke for her second album, but their sessions worked so well that the pair ended up writing an entire EP together.

Their new EP Gemini EP (June Baby Records) by Jack and White has a lovely and easy breezy 70s inspired California light rock vibe that I’m really liking right now! I downloaded the EP after getting the free download of the very catchy “Double Trouble” (the iTunes free single this week). Good choice of a song to give away – it’s light, upbeat and catchy with great harmonies and IMO it’s the most listener-friendly from the EP. This is an indie release (so I’m not sure if they can even send singles to radio), but if they were, I think “Double Trouble” would have the best chance on HAC.

My favorite track from the EP though is the angrier (and rockier) “Smoke and Mirrors”, but the quirky “Inside Outside” comes close too. I love how strong and confident Brooke sounds on these tracks – I’ve always loved the warm tone of her voice and I felt that these two tracks showcased that quality the best. Brooke’s voice is more front and center for all the songs, but her partner Jack provides good harmonizing vocals too, for example, I quite liked the track “Telephone Games” for the pair’s delicate quiet harmonies.

To sum it up, basically, I really enjoyed the entire Gemini EP (throwback vibe and all) – and there aren’t really any songs that felt like filler to me (well, there are only six tracks after all), so I have to say that I was pretty happy with my well-spent $4.95 🙂

Album Review – Brooke White’s Live Session EP (iTunes Exclusive)

February 18, 2010 1 comment

EP Tracks:

  1. Rhiannon (Piano Version) [Live]
  2. Hold Up My Heart (Piano Version) [Live]
  3. Radio Radio (Acoustic Version) [Live]
  4. High Hopes & Heartbreak (Piano Version)
  5. Take It Away (Piano Version) [Live]

Okay, just an aside before I go to the review… I don’t know about you, but current American Idol Top 24 contestant Didi Benami reminds me of a much more emotionally fragile Brooke White. I mean, Brooke White was pretty fragile on her season, but she wasn’t sobbing every other minute like Didi is. I’m kinda wondering how Didi is going to deal with all the Idol craziness what with her penchant for bursting into tears (of sadness, of happiness…) at a drop of a hat…

So anyway, did anyone catch American Idol using Brooke White’s ‘California Song‘ from her album ‘High Hopes & Heartbreak‘ in a montage in one of the Hollywood Rounds last week? I really wish that Idol would start putting labels on the side, so people would know what song is playing on the background… Okay, I am so RAMBLING… sorry… but I decided to check out what’s up with Brooke White and I found that she had released an iTunes Live Sessions EP! (Now, I’m wishing that Adam/Kris/Allison will also release one!)

Brooke White’s music has always struck me like she’d stumbled into a time machine back in the 70s and somehow got transported to the present time. Michael Slezak from EW has described Brooke’s music “like they’d have dominated AM radio back in the ’70s” and even though I wasn’t alive to listen to radio back then, I would imagine that he is right. This iTunes Live Sessions EP would have fit really well back then too. If you want a break from the current pop songs, give Brooke’s EP a listen – it’s completely retro-chic and acoustic – and I think that it has a place in current music too. Sometimes, you just need to lie back, relax and let someone’s voice coax you into a comfortable peaceful limbo…

Definitely check out Brooke’s cover of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rhiannon‘ on this EP – I love her vocals on this song. I’m not surprised that this track is the most popular track for downloads from the EP. Because in terms of ‘quality’ of songwriting, Brooke’s not there yet with her original songs. She has the ‘old’ in her sound, but her original songs aren’t really that good, especially when compared to something from Fleetwood Mac (or even Kings of Leon from her cover of ‘Use Somebody‘ on her album). I did find the non-discofied version of ‘High Hopes & Heartbreak‘ much more palatable than the original song – the piano-only version on the EP imbued it with an almost ethereal magical quality missing from the version on her album.

My personal favorite is ‘Take It Away‘ – it is so stripped down & raw (just her voice and a guitar) and has that low quality echo-y thing going on – like she’s just jamming in a garage or bathroom or something and she just made a recording for kicks. I’m not sure why I find that so cool, but I do 🙂

Check out Brooke White’s Live Session EP on iTunes – it’s only $4.95! That’s like two coffees from Starbucks – and it’ll last a lot longer and still leave you with a comfortable warm and happy feeling in your insides! (that came out all wrong, but you get my gist, right?)

Brooke White Performs “California Christmas”

November 28, 2009 Leave a comment

Brooke White was one of my faves from Season 7 of American Idol. I wish that she was more popular, but she’s signed to her own indie label with hardly any promotion, so I don’t know how that’s going to happen.

Anyway, she has an iTunes Exclusive Holiday EP ($ 2.97) out that I didn’t even know about until I visited her Myspace today!

  1. Away In the Manger
  2. Blue Christmas
  3. California Christmas

Here she is performing ‘California Christmas’ from her living room. The sound sucks, but I’m kinda digging it.

Brooke White Sings “Let It Be” with Guests (Benton Paul, Michael Johns and surprise! David Archuleta)

October 5, 2009 Leave a comment

Just found this buried treasure on YouTube (from Brooke White’s concert at Murray Theater, Utah). She’s currently touring with Michael Johns to support her album “High Hopes & Heartbreak” (Just $7.99 on iTunes).

I just love how Brooke White sings with such pure joy. “Let It Be” is a perfect song for her – such magic 🙂 And she’s no longer shaking like a leaf like how I remember her from the end of her run on AI.

Pretty stoked that David Archuleta found the time to not just attend the concert but sing a song with her! Man, he has grown a lot as a performer, hasn’t he? I was comparing him to Michael Johns and Benton Paul (whoever he is, he’s cute, but I could barely hear him) and I thought David was heads & shoulders above them… Can’t beat vocal power like that.

FREE iTunes Download – Brooke White’s “Radio Radio” Music Video

July 15, 2009 Leave a comment

I was a huuuge fan of Brooke White on Season 7 of American Idol. I’m so happy she actually has an album – High Hopes & Heartbreak – which went on sale on iTunes today. To promote this, iTunes has made available the music video for “Radio Radio” (the first single) for FREE download.

I kinda dig the retro feel of the song (and the video) – interesting trip back in time on the many faces of radios….
