Happy Halloween! (Trying to collect… Cameos from the American Idols!)

November 1, 2010 4 comments

Hey, hey, hey – taking a break to greet everyone who have their freak out on for Halloween!

Mind helping me out? I’m trying to collect all the photos that the Idols (and their dearests) send out of themselves in their Halloween finest. So far, Kris (& Katy) Allen have been mighty obliging, but I’m drawing a blank with a lot of idols. (Update: Adam Lambert’s pals – esp Lee Cherry! –  have obliged us with group pics at least ;)) If you’ve got a link for more photos for the idols, please leave a comment with the link, k?

Check out the hilarious photos we have so far!

So, Who Did You Vote For @ the American Idol Top 20 (Women’s Edition)?

Oh, the women just are in a different league from the men this season – overall much more entertaining than the men. Can’t we just dump the guys right now? Saying that – wow – some big clunkers for the women this week though. What was Didi Benami thinking? She totally crashed and burned, didn’t she? She meows before she sings, and then she proceeds to sing “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers like a cat-on-a-hot-tin-roof really badly. Ouch, Didi, bad song choice – Didi has this kitten-ish way of singing that usually works, but definitely not in this song. Hope her fans save her so she can redeem herself next week.

My top 3 for this night – Crystal Bowersox, then, like ten leagues behind her, Katelyn Epperly and Siobhan Magnus.

Crystal Bowersox goes bluesy and gospel with “As Long As I See The Light” by Creedence Clearwater Revival – and that was a total magical American Idol ‘moment’ for me. I am so freakin’ glad she got the okay from the doctors to sing – I hope she doesn’t get any more ’emergencies’. Would be a total tragedy if she gets disqualified due to health issues. Love the vocals, love the interpretation – chills, baby. (And I know that I sound like the worst shallow person on the planet, but I hope she has some dental work done when the money starts rolling in – is she missing her incisors or something?)

Yes, Katelyn Epperly turned “The Scientist” by Coldplay into a virtual lullaby, but I don’t know. I liked it. I like that she’s turning out to be so much more interesting – she was studying to be a recording engineer! She was the first to break out a piano this season! And yes, it was too slow, but I ended up really paying attention to the voice – and I’m really liking her full, rich tone. And there’s stage presence there too. Now, if she can just figure out what her box is…

Siobhan Magnus is one likeable weird chick, isn’t she? It’s hilarious how she always sounds like she’s high on cough syrup or cold medicine when she’s talking – it’s the lack of vocal inflections 😉 She sang “Think” by Aretha Franklin, and I wasn’t as blown away as the judges – thought the song as a whole was too big for her – and no – one long big glory note does not an entire song make. But she does have a gorgeous big belting voice – I hope she breaks out some Paramore or something. I think she’ll do really well with that.

Note : I’m probably being terribly unfair to Lilly Scott who sang “A Change is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke. She sang it really well, in a jazzy light way, that fits with her personal style – and she deservedly got praise, but that was no ‘moment’ for me. I thought she totally watered down what should be a really powerful protest song, since IMO she doesn’t have the vocal chops to really sing it. Hated how she sucked out all the powerful emotions out of the song. But at the same time, maybe I’m just totally biased since I just couldn’t get Adam Lambert’s take-it-to-church version out of my mind?

And I really hope that Didi picks herself up, because I was totally right about Didi being able to sell downloads. Based on Idol Chatter figures, her take on Ingrid Michaelson’s ‘The Way I Am’ made the original song sell 22,000. And previous to that, she also sold 20K of Kat’s ‘Terrified’.

So, Who Did You Vote For @ the American Idol Top 24 (Women’s Edition)?

If you missed the show, Rickey.Org has high quality videos up on his site. My top three for tonight (in no particular order) : Crystal Bowersox, Siobhan Magnus and Didi Benami!

Crystal Bowersox is really, really good – she was the best tonight for me with her rendition of ‘Hand in My Pocket’ by Alanis Morissette. Very raw, very real, very strong vocals. And she was just being herself too! I’d like to be at whatever subway station Simon Cowell claims to hear similar quality singers like her! I mean, when was the last time Simon even set foot inside a subway station?

Listen to Hand in My Pocket:

Siobhan Magnus gets cool points from me simply for being a glass blower apprentice. I mean, how out of left field is that? I liked her version of ‘Wicked Game’ by Chris Isaac – she didn’t really change it up, but I thought that was a wise choice. I’m really looking forward to more from this girl – she seemed so catty in the Hollywood rounds and I didn’t really like her – but I’m turning around on her.

Listen to Wicked Game:

But out of everyone, I think that Didi Benami will be the one selling the iTunes downloads this year. Yes, she was very low key with her song, but what can you do, it’s a low key song? And in terms of the girl with a quirky singer-songwriter vibe, she slayed Lilly Scott and Lacey Brown tonight. Didi had sold nearly 20,000 downloads of Katharine McPhee’s ‘Terrified’ after she sang it Hollywood Week, and if I were a betting person, I’d bet that Didi just sold a couple of downloads of ‘The Way I Am‘ by Ingrid Michaelson tonight too. Didi has that quality that ‘sells’ the song for me, and makes me want to check out other songs by the original artist, unlike everyone else out of the 12 women who sang tonight.

P.S. I’m glad she picked up on maybe trying to hold back the water-works!
