(American Idol) My Favorite from the Top 13 – Jessica Sanchez (I Will Always Love You)

Hey, it’s American Idol live shows again! Okay, I tuned in to the Top 13 performance night, and the hands down best vocal of the night was definitely Jessica Sanchez’s “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston. Just impeccable, and in a totally different league from everyone else in the competition. (Not as powerful a performance as Jennifer Hudson’s, but hey, it’s an unfair comparison). Glad that Jimmy Iovine and Mary J Blige pointed out her excessive vibrato, and as a result, I thought she pulled that back a bit in her performance.

As for the boys, surprise, I really liked how Heejun Han sounded singing Stevie Wonder’s “All In Love Is Fair” (here’s his performance video). Very vulnerable and great tone to his voice. I think I should be following his twitter account (@HHanAI11) for the laughs! My niece hopes he survives until Top 10 – he’s easily the most interesting finalist and should make the tour more interesting.

As for the worst of the night? Shannon Magrane who sang a very shaky “I Have Nothing”.  How about you – do you agree with my choices?

(American Idol) My Favorite from the Top 12 Girls – Jessica Sanchez (Love You I Do)

Hey, it’s American Idol live shows again! Okay, I tuned in to the Top 12 Girls performance night this time, and man – those were some pretty painful-to-listen-to performances (Exhibit A – Haley Johnson who mangled “Sweet Dreams” by the Eurythmics)! And can we please ban Adele songs (which singers not named Adele can’t do justice to anyway). Judges are completely useless, with Randy pretty much the only one offering criticism (albeit in his usual incoherent fashion).

I thought the semifinalist who was most comfortable on stage (and sounded the best – even with a sore throat) was Jessica Sanchez (who performed “Love You I Do” from the musical Dreamgirls). I just wish her vibrato wasn’t so pronounced… and I hope she learns to conserve her voice if she survives for the long haul. Second best for me was Shannon Magrane who sang “There is a Candle” by Kathy Troccoli. I doubt if anyone is really familiar with the song, so hopefully, that doesn’t hurt her.

For me, these two sixteen-year-olds were the most memorable for the night. How about you, who did you like?
