Weekly Meme: Musing Mondays (Jan 24)

Fresh off the Bloggiesta Challenge, I thought I’d continue with dipping my toes in a meme or two (or three!) Anyway, this weekly Monday meme called Musing Mondays sounded interesting (via the Should Be Reading blog), with the question of the week:

Is there a book you absolutely love, but for some reason, people never think it sounds interesting, or maybe they read it and don’t like it at all?

Well, this must be a rhetorical question since we all have such diverse tastes, so the odds are, there are always going to be books I love that someone (or many someones) will hate.

But if I were to cite specific cases, it would be that I have the tendency to always end up gushing over books with really, really depressing story lines (aka Grand Tragedies). For example, I loved ‘Entitlement’ by Jonathan Bennett, and I loved Kazuo Ishiguro’s ‘Never Let Me Go‘ and I loved ‘A Reliable Wife’ by Robert Goolrick. What do these three books have in common? Absolutely tragic and heartbreaking (more of heart-rending) endings. Where you feel bereft and like you went through a personal loss once you turn the last page. I would go around completely depressed and in a funk after reading these books, and my family would wonder why I’d put myself through such torture…. And then, I’d say - But the stories are so beautifully sad! and so well written!

Then I have to go read some silly chicklit to get my emotions back into normal equilibrium levels again 😉

I couldn’t read the heart breaking ones because I want to smile when I come to the end of a book!

Exactly my mom’s point! 🙂 But the heartbreaking books also bring a certain satisfaction…

These titles are new to me but will definitely look into them. Thank you for sharing.

Read Kazuo Ishiguro’s book first! It’s the best from the three (although I highly recommend all of them)

I’ve read a few heartbreaking ones too, and the story always sticks with me too for some reason!

Which books have you read, Tanya? I might like to check them out…
