Several FREE Children / YA E-Books for Download from Smashwords

I don’t check Smashwords that often, but they do feature a lot of freebie downloads both from self-published indie authors and from mainstream publishers (check here for a list of the latest freebies). There’s a separate page where you can find several FREE e-Book downloads for children and young adults that you might want to check out this summer vacation. I don’t know if you let your kids borrow your ‘toys’, but I’ve learned that kids (i.e my nieces/nephews) can be very responsible with these gadgets and are quite capable of reading quietly in a corner if they’re interested enough. I just make sure that my ‘toys’ are appropriately swathed in protective casing just in case of accidental drops (which I’ve been guilty of myself, so can’t really blame the kids)!

* Smashwords offers downloads in multiple e-Book formats, so you’ll be likely to find a format that you can read on your Kindle, Nook, iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch and the soon to be available Kobo reader. By the way, in case you missed the news yesterday, there is a current price war with e-Readers! Barnes & Noble is now offering a $149 Nook Wifi eReader and reduced the Nook with 3G + Wifi eReader to 199.99. In response, Amazon Kindle promptly reduced it’s price to the rock bottom $189.00 (if you don’t mind refurbished units, you can even grab a Kindle for only $139.99!) And lastly, even though the Kobo eReader is listed as $149 in Borders, it’s actually reduced to $129 since Borders will be bundling a $20 gift card with each purchase! Just waiting on Sony to also jump into the fray! I’d say, if you’ve been wondering whether to get yourself an eReader or not, now is the time to take advantage of this price war! I’ve been reading eBooks for a long time now, and there’s never been such a deluge of legal free downloads, so take advantage of both the price war & the freebies!

So, like I said, there’s a ton of FREE children’s and young adult/teen eBooks found on Smashwords, just be patient enough to browse through and pick the ones that seem promising to you. I’m featuring some books that I thought would most appeal to the kids in my life 🙂 I haven’t actually read the books, but I thought the synopsis were interesting to pick out from the crop.

The Misspellers‘ by Michael Martineck seemed to me to be the most interesting of the lot. Check out the author’s webpage for more info.

The Misspellers‘ by Michael Martineck is available for FREE download on the Smashwords site. Just click here to download! The reviews for the book are pretty good!

Book Description:

They should have known not to nose around.

Outside, the house smelled of rotten cabbage, burnt onions and wet dogs. Inside, there was no phone, no television, not so much as a single electric light. Carlin and Jack didn’t like the place, but all they had to do was water plants while the owner was away.

No one told them to discover the house’s biggest secret: science and magic don’t mix.
