We Can Now Lend Our Kindle Books!

December 30, 2010 Leave a comment

Yes, just like Nook owners, Kindle owners now also have the privilege of lending their books out – with some caveats of course. We can’t exactly open a book renting service yet, nor is this feature useful for libraries… since you can only lend a book ONCE and only if the publisher allows this feature for their books.

For more information on Lending Kindle Books, just head on to Amazon for step-by-step instructions!

Eligible Kindle books can be loaned once for a period of 14 days. The borrower does not need to own a Kindle — Kindle books can also be read using our free Kindle reading applications for PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, BlackBerry, and Android devices. Not all books are lendable — it is up to the publisher or rights holder to determine which titles are eligible for lending. The lender will not be able to read the book during the loan period.

Free ebook : Battlestar Galactica: the Miniseries (by Jeffrey A. Carver)

March 24, 2009 1 comment

So, were you one of those who watched the Sci-fi (or the rebranded Syfy – what a moronic rebranding by the way) mini-series “Battlestar Galactica” finale? Are you a totally lost new viewer? Or are you a veteran who’d like to refresh your memories?

Well, if you’re any of the above, you might want to check out Jeffrey A. Carver’s novelization of Battlestar Galactica: the Miniseries (Tor Science Fiction). And as a special gift to his fans, Jeffrey Carver is providing a FREE download of the ebook version of his novel on his website.

Product Description (from Amazon.com)

“Battlestar Galactica, an original SCI FI Channel miniseries, electrified viewers and critics alike and was hailed as a landmark in sci-fi television. Here, for the first time, is the novel based on that exciting drama.

For forty years, the Twelve Colonies of Man were at peace, united since the war against the robotic Cylons. These mechanical beings, created by mankind to perform the manual labor civilization required, were gone forever…or so humanity thought.

But in those years, the Cylons developed new Cylons that looked and acted like humans…and then they attacked the Twelve Worlds.

Only a single warship survived the massive attack: Battlestar Galactica, the oldest ship in the fleet, ready to be decommissioned and turned into a museum. Commander William Adama, himself set to retire, had but one course: to marshal his meager forces, and somehow keep the Cylons from wiping out the last vestiges of the human race. But their inhuman Cylon enemies—stronger, smarter, and driven to destroy—may be too powerful for them, and all of humanity, to survive.”

The novelization is a pretty faithful retelling of the tv series (from what I can see – I’m still reading) with the characters just fleshed out a bit more. I can say that it is a page turner and is pretty fast-paced. Jeffrey Carver writes a mean action scene (and there are many), and has an easy-reading writing style. Don’t expect the author to explain or clear up plot holes or give more details to you though, because he doesn’t. Oh well, novelizations are never considered “canon” anyway.

So, if you haven’t gotten the book yet – give it a go. Click here to get your free copy – scroll down to the bottom. While you’re at it, check out his other books “Sunborn“, all his books from “The Chaos Chronicles”, and his short fiction which are also available for free download. Also check out his personal blog to get the latest news straight from the source!

If you want to support the author though, head on to Amazon to download (and pay for) the Kindle Edition or a wood-pulp copy.
